| Words to Find | Extra’s – may be funny (probably not though, NWONW hit me at just the right time to take it too heart and live/enjoy it as best I could) |
| These Animal Men | In my opinion the best of the NWONW bands, had commandments to live by, e.g. ‘Don't be ashamed of your adolescence’ |
| Speeed King | First These Animal Men single, came with a free speed wrap |
| New Wave Of New Wave | Term invented and popularised by the NME and Melody Maker, after 1.5 – 2 years it became Britpop and most of the bands transferred into the Top 40 |
| SMASH | The other best of the NWONW bands and very political with a big P.. |
| Shagging In The Streets | The first ‘proper’ NWONW release. A compilation single released by Fierce Panda, all the bands had been linked (correctly or wrongly) to NWONW |
| Gazelles | Footwear of choice, along with Puma States they probably helped foster the trend of reissuing old trainers. |
| Fanzines | NWONW (and Riot Grrl) were probably the last hurrah for fanzines. The internet was just round the corner and Britpop was so big/mainstream you didn’t need dedicated fans to get the word out and help foster a sense of community. |
| NME | Used to be a really good music paper when I was in my teens and early twenties. Now mostly full of bands that sound like other, older bands (yes, this bit is tongue in cheek) |
| Sleeper | Maybe best known for the “Sleeperbloke”. Basically compared to Louise Wener, the front person/singer, the rest of the band were a bit beige/dull or that was the way the press portrayed them. Probably more of a Britpop band than NWONW, but hey ho. |
| Elastica | Did Damon Blur write all their songs? Or was that just a bitchy rumour put about by people scared of strong women? Kinda petered out for the usual reasons – musical differences, heroin, etc |
| Naked City | Pretty good (and sometimes outstanding) channel 4 music show. Early appearance for Johnny Vaughan (back when he was good, before he went mainstream, etc, etc) and Caitlin Moran (before she went on to greater achievements) |
| Speed | Drug of choice and helped you fit into your skinny tee-shirts. Although like the first New Wave heroin took over in the last days (for some at least)(our lawyers made us put that last bit in) |
| Shed Seven | From York and were kinda painted as yokels come down to London Town. Were compared to The Smiths in their early days. Are probably the grandfather for “landfill indie”. |
| Echobelly | Were compared to The Smiths and got praise from Morrissey (or at least that’s what I remember). If I wasn’t an enlightened being I would probably add that Sonya, the singer, was v cute. |
| Compulsion | Too me, they had a bit more of a heavy edge, maybe even heavy rock/metal, to them. But this is me remembering them after not hearing them for 15+ years! |
